Jay Harrelson

Col. Jay Harrelson (1919 - 2009). Jay Harrelson graduated from the University of Nebraska and the Air War College. He joined the Army as a flying cadet and after finishing flying school in April, 1941 was sent directly to Clark Air Base in The Philippine Islands. He and his Squadron were sent to Bataan Field, located on the Bataan Peninsula where he was to maintain the Field and await supplies which never arrived. Bataan was surrendered to the Japanese on April 9, 1942 and that was the start of the Bataan Death March. After surviving the Death March, he then survived 3? years as a Japanese POW and was liberated by the Russian Army in September 1945. He spent the next 25 years at various Bases in the United States and Overseas including a tour of duty in Vietnam. His last year of service was spent at Davis Monthan AFB. He retired on August 15, 1970
