Albert T. Pirtle

Army

Sgt. Albert T. "Snapper" Pirtle (Sedona, Arizona):  U.S. Army 82nd Airborne - 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment "Red Devils" - Operation Neptune, D-Day, Normandy.  Sgt. Pirtle was a rigger for the 508th and one of only four members of a 20-man crew that survived their D-Day jump not listed as KIA, MIA, or POW.  After landing in darkness and days away from reaching safe haven, Sgt. Pirtle pretended to lie dead as Nazi soldiers moved past him, close enough that he could “reach out and touch their boots.” Operation Neptune was the airborne phase for Operation Overlord, the massive plan for the D-Day invasion of Europe, and was the first combat jump for the 508th PIR.  My grandpa, my hero...I miss you deeply.  We are proud to walk in your honor.
