George Johnson


George Henry Johnson Sr. was born May 8th, 1943 in Cairo, Illinois to Lewis Johnson Sr. and Ida Mae Johnson (Moss). He was raised in Cairo and graduated from Sumner High School in 1961. George went on to join the U.S. Army on June 5th that same year. He attended basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. After completing basic training, he went on to complete medical training at Fort Sam Houston, TX becoming a Medical Specialist. George volunteered for airborne training and was assigned to Fort Campbell, Kentucky where he completed the Basic Airborne Course (Jump School), 101st Airborne Division in December 1961. George served at Fort Campbell from 1961-1967 having a short break in service from June to August 1964.

On 8th September 1966, George deployed to the Republic of Vietnam (South Vietnam) and served as a combat medic with the 27th Engineer Battalion. George participated in several major combat operations, to include: Counteroffensive, Phase II; Counteroffensive, Phase III around Xuan Loc, Gia Ray, Bien Hoa-Long Binh and other nearby regions in South Vietnam. George completed his tour in Vietnam on 26th July, 1967 and was honorably discharged from the Army at the rank of Staff Sergeant/E6. George
