My father joined the Army in 1969 with his first assignment to Vietnam. He proudly served 24 years and retired in 1993. He fought for 15 years to come back into the Army. He was taken up on his offer in 2008 and was returned to active duty status with his deployment to Afghanistan. He volunteered for a second tour in 2009. My father was killed by an IUD during the first elections held in Afghanistan in 2009. He was 11 days shy of his 60th birthday. He was known on the ISAF compound as the soldier who ran every morning with the U.S. Army flag. I walk for him.
