In late February 1945, the 353rd Engineers regiment and its band were ordered northwest again to a new duty station in the philippines. while the band was at sea, the marines landed on Iwo Jima. One more step in the island hopping campain, and the allies would be poised for an invasion of Japan. Mop-up activity was still ongoing on the phhilippines, when the band arrived, so the members of the unit were finally awarded a battle star. The band was billeted in squad tents at the wak-Wak country club, just outside Manilla. Duty in the Philippines involved fewer shows and more work with the engineers. /nBy Fredrick James Hill veteran Army
